The relationship between political research and political activism has
received increasing attention in recent years. Political philosophers have
debated the complexities that arise when those whose primary concern
is to study politics begin engaging in political activism.1 However, the
discussion has largely relied on general theoretical arguments, and refrained
from explicitly addressing the evolving global reality of democratic
backsliding, which often involves direct attacks by populist leaders
on academic institutions.
